Liepaja University


Liepaja University is accredited state higher educational establishment, which implements study programmes at all three study levels: basic, Master and Doctorate studies. As its mission states – Liepaja University is a symbol of education, science and culture of Liepaja and Kurzeme region that provides with competitive, internationally recognized varied education. The LiepU develops innovative research, ensures sustainability of society development, economic knowledge development in Latvia as a lawful partner in European Union.
The higher educational establishment was founded in 1954 on the basis of Teacher Training Institute. For long years the educational establishment offered education in educational science and has educated thousands of teachers for preschools, primary schools as well as teachers of Mathematics and Latvian Language and Literature. Concurrently with teacher training study programmes a broad spectrum of non-pedagogical study programmes has been offered since 1990. In the course of time the name of the higher educational establishment has changed more than once. On 16 July 2008 Liepāja Academy of Pedagogy became Liepaja University (LiepU).
The Faculty of Pedagogy and Social Work gets involved in local Latvian and international projects that ensure possibilities for the teaching staff, students, collaborating preschools and schools to get acquainted with the experience of other countries, and introduce pedagogical and didactic innovations in a creative way. Some of the most inspiring and beneficial international projects relating to preschool education were CREANET (2011-2013) and PLAY, TOYS AND CULTURE (2012-2014).
